Do automatic doors need an electrician in Victoria?
Sometimes. It depends on whether there's a power point where the door motor goes.
Short answer: a home door opener that plugs into an existing power point near the door doesn't need an electrician. Anything that needs new fixed wiring, like a new power point at the door head or a hard-wired commercial operator, does. In Victoria that work can only be done by a registered electrical contractor, who gives you a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
When you don't need one
Most residential sliding and swing openers run off a plug-pack or a short lead. If there's a power point within reach of the door head, we plug in, clip the cable neatly along the frame and you're done.
When you do
- No power point near the door. An electrician adds one, usually on the wall beside the head.
- The operator is hard-wired (most commercial and shopfront operators are).
- The door is connected to a fire panel or building alarm.
How we handle it
We tell you upfront if your door needs electrical work. The electrician quotes their part separately and gives you the certificate. We don't hide it inside our price, and we don't do it ourselves.
Low voltage is different
Sensors, push-buttons, key switches and electric locks run on low voltage from the operator. That wiring is part of our install.
