Automatic doors: questions we get asked

If yours isn't here, send it with your quote request.

How much does an automatic door cost in Melbourne?

For a house, adding an opener to the sliding door you already have starts from $1,890 installed. An opener for a hinged door starts from $2,490. A new interior automatic sliding glass door, glass included, starts from $4,990. All prices include GST. Shopfront doors are quoted per job.

Can you automate the sliding door I already have?

Usually, yes. The door has to slide easily by hand, the track has to be straight and there has to be room above or beside the door for the drive unit. We ask for two photos and the door width before we quote, so you are not paying for a visit to find out it will not work.

Do I need an electrician?

Most home openers plug into a normal power point near the top of the door. If there is no power point there, a licensed electrician has to add one. In Victoria only a registered electrical contractor can do fixed wiring, and that part is quoted separately with a compliance certificate.

What happens in a blackout?

The door can always be pushed by hand. With the battery backup option it keeps opening and closing for a few hours without power.

Will it hurt a child or a pet?

Every opener we fit stops and reverses when it meets resistance. Most also have a sensor that stops the door closing while someone is in the opening. We set the closing force low for homes with kids and pets.

Can it lock?

Yes. An electric lock can be added so the door locks itself when it closes, or only at night. Without one, your existing door lock still works as normal.

How long does it take?

An opener on an existing door is usually a half-day install. A new glass door takes one day on site, but the toughened glass is made to measure first, which takes about 7–10 working days after we measure.

Which areas do you cover?

All of metro Melbourne, plus Geelong and the Surf Coast. Further out, ask and we will tell you the travel cost.

Do you do shop or commercial entrances?

Not as a main contractor. We install for aluminium and shopfront companies as their subcontractor; see trade installs. Busy public entrances are best served by the big door companies with 24-hour service.

Do you service or repair existing automatic doors?

For homes, yes, if parts are available for your system. Send the brand and a photo of the operator label.

Is there a warranty?

Operators carry the manufacturer's warranty, and our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months. Details are on your written quote.
